Copenhagen Cloudburst Plan
Efficient rain water handling on the surface in cloudburst events
Separating rain water and black sewage water – and handling most of the rain water on the surface – and making rain water handling a part of the future urban design of Copenhagen.
Known drawbacks of design:
A possible drawback could be the fact that it is impossible to implement the designs all over the city at the same time which will make some city districts vulnerable for a longer period.
Status of realization:
Co-existence, Energy, Environment, Government, Urbanization, Water
Region of use:
The cloudburst plan will make Copenhagen a more green and blue city by integrating rain water management into the urban design for storing, leading or managing rain water in the case of extreme rain events.
The Cloudburst plan has as its first priority to use methods that will combine rain water handling with elements that have a positive effect on the city – such as recreative elements like canals, green streets and roads that are designed to handle water or to divert it to areas where the damage will be smaller. This will supplement the existing sewer system minimizing the risk of sewer overflows and the following health hazards.
In case of cloudbursts the city and the citizens will have to handle a very high number of damages which will cost money, trouble and make the city less attractive for both ciitzens and businesses.
